My Christmas gift guide: Fashion, Beauty, Skin Care and Tech!

It's that time of the year again!

I am getting super-excited since we entered the month of December! Magical decorations and Christmas trees are already set up in my neighborhood, I think about all the delicious food that is to be cooked and shared with friends and family, and we’re all getting our style on point for New Year’s Eve.
But as much as I love to eat, the best part for me is always the moment when we open the presents! At this time of the year, we focus on making our loved ones happy by finding the perfect gift…And that's where I stop dreaming, because now I think of how much of a hassle it is to find that perfect gift!

Last year, I almost lost it while trying to find cool, useful AND affordable items for each and every member of the family. This year, my early resolution is to never get to that point, ever again! So I brainstormed, researched, and eventually made this little guide of 10 affordable and useful items that one cannot go wrong with!

1. “My Little Mini Box” by L’Occitane en Provence – Free with order of $25+

This cute little box contains generous bubble bath soap, an eau de toilette with a delicate floral fragrance, a soft hand cream enriched with milk and almond oil, and two Christmas treats: a soft blend of Kusmi Tea herbs and a delicious Première Pression Provence calisson.

A headwrap kinda day!

A colorful headwrap always goes well with an all white outfit.

I found this headwrap at Goodwill for $3 and I fell in love with it. The colors just stand out!

For the outfit, I wanted to do the whole maxi skirt-croptop thing.
Since I don't own a maxi skirt, I just folded a white bustier dress around my waist.
I found the top at Goodwill for $3.99...yep that cheap! It's warm and cozy, and you can make the outfit look harder with a denim jacket.

WHO the heck am I anyway?

As I was doing homework, I suddenly realized: you have no idea who I am, do you? And I figured I would fix that, and tell you a bit about me, and about how I ended up halfway across the world, from Dakar to Paris to SF. I hate doing homework anyway.

Sooooo. I was born and raised in Senegal, a small, beautiful country on the West Coast of Africa; I loved living there. I used to go to France to visit family every holiday, but I was always eager to go home. We lived in a house about five minutes away from the beaches (because they were a lot of beaches – we were right on the coast); the perfect place. Today, the Almadies neighborhood is the city’s posh, kinda snoby neighborhood, full of expensive nightclubs and fancy restaurants. But twenty years ago, my father was the first – yes, the very first – to ever build a house there; we owned the only house within miles. A few years later, other families settled next to our home. They were almost all white families. It was interesting to be the only black family around in our own country. My best friend was a blond girl with blue eyes – Tania; we were always together until she went back to France. Life in Senegal is easy with its year-long summer weather, and people are welcoming. Mind you, Senegal was actually awarded 6th most welcoming country in the world! So when my parents announced that we were moving to France after I finished high school, I cried for 15 minutes, at least. Now, I know what you think. Poor Brigitte is moving to Paris, how sad! Well, yes, I was sad. I was going to leave my high school friends behind, my house, my ROOM. I didn’t want that. And I don’t even see why people love Paris so much...Don’t get me wrong! It is beautiful, it is the capital of Fashion, and I do have fun there. But when you’ve lived in Africa for your whole childhood, you do not want to leave. In my case though, the sadness didn’t last. I had another objective. The U.S.A; better yet: California.

See, I am one of these people who, as a teenager, saw America through the media and especially channels such as MTV, with its reality shows (The Hills or Laguna Beach). I was a fervent viewer back in Senegal, and it didn’t change when I moved to Paris. I practically learned English with these shows. I know. As lame as it sounds, through them, I saw California as the dream land where everything was possible – even the impossible. I was already seeing myself as a rich and famous it-girl walking down Rodeo Drive with a dozen shopping bags and high heels, followed by paparazzi. I am just kidding…a little. Of course, my life here has nothing to do with all of that. It doesn’t mean that I stopped dreaming about it. I went to a French-American business school in Paris; they were offering an exchange program in San Francisco, and now, I am here. Let’s say my dreams are now more realistic: at the airport, the hard reality hit me right in the face. I was no celebrity, no it-girl. I didn’t need to hear (or understand the unsaid) that I looked so suspect that they had to put me in a separate line and look at my things. Why? I don’t want to know. I did realize that after 9/11, it would be difficult being in a US airport as a stranger, but this much? I felt immediately unwanted, and my feet began touching the ground again. In other words, I woke up.

The hassle to find a place to live was the second obstacle to my future-fabulous-and-happy life – if we want to stay optimistic. I went places that made me question my faith in humanity. Some people actually try to rent places that could only be good for rats. It’s my faith in God, however, that was reinforced when I found the perfect room completely out of the blue. Someone must’ve been looking after me: a girl from SF State was leaving the room she was renting near the campus, and posted a picture of the house on Facebook. I wasn’t the first to see the post, but I was surely the first to pick up my phone, because I got the room five minutes before another girl called. Talk about luck: the house was well decorated, the bathrooms were clean, and the bedroom quint and cozy. I didn’t even want to think about it; I just knew I was going to be happy there. I snapped a ton of pictures and sent them to my parents. They were just as happy as me. I had been in San Francisco for only three days. I paid for my room and spent my first night out of Mom and Dad’s house. I thought I was prepared for that moment; I thought I would be scared in a way, and excited in another. I was actually very sad. I missed them terribly.

A couple of days after I moved to my student room, Orientation Week started at the university. It was supposed to be a way of welcoming students, and it was, but I don’t think it worked out as well as I would have wanted. There were house parties and trips planned by the Exchange program committee, but at the end of each day, I still felt like I was out of place. I didn’t share the love of partying and drinking alcohol all night. I didn’t like to “get wasted”. I was the only African girl, and whether or not that mattered, I was feeling lonely. That was when I met my boyfriend (yaay). He was nice and handsome with his thick brown curls which turned red under the sunlight; bright blue eyes shaped in a way that made him look always tired. That day, he was wearing a beige cardigan and blue jeans, and was carrying a (completely busted) black backpack – that I wish he could get rid of now. He was very handsome, but that’s not why I fell for him. I fell for him because he had the courage to come and introduce himself, out of the blue, at the bus stop. Who does that? I thought it was funny and interesting. Of course it wasn’t the first time a guy came up to me; every girl gets that. But it felt good, for once, not to be whistled at, or not to be called “Sexy”, “Mami”, and other petty ways to show interest in a woman. We spoke for a while and he eventually asked for my number. I wanted to say no. In my country, a girl cannot give up her number like that. We don’t do this. We like men to court us, to keep running for a while, before we even accept to talk to them. It always sounded ridiculous to me, but at that moment, I realized that my first thought was: Wait, he can’t have your number just like that. You don’t even know him. What would Mom say? Before my mind could put its veto on the matter, I heard myself say “Oh sure! Here, 415…” I was angry at myself. Afterwards, everything happened fast. What was I thinking, you ask? I wish I knew. I was only going to be here for 6 months. What’s going to happen after that? I thought. I was only going to suffer and make someone else suffer…unless I stayed. I am now here for another two years.

Don’t get me wrong, I am graduating in two years; that is why I am staying in the first place. But a new relationship makes you decide faster, makes things more dangerous, complicated, and beautiful as well. I left everything I knew and loved, and it may or may not be the biggest mistake of my life: I fell in the trap of loveeeeee and affection (Holla Riri! Holla Future!). However, though I was afraid to be hurt, San Francisco is the kind of city that makes you see new opportunities over time. There are so many things to see and discover that I know I'll be okay no matter what happens.

Do you think I'm crazy?

My 3 October Favorites: Denim, Floral Print and Faux leather!

My fellow Fashionistas living in San Francisco should know: having "Fall trends" or "Winter trends" is much harder for us when we know how unpredictable the SF weather is. Back in Paris, having distinct seasons, besides making me burn or freeze, helped me organize my closet in advance in order to get ready for the upcoming season.
But when I moved to SF, my closet-organizing skills (yes, I just made that up) got a bit shaken. Just when I was starting to enjoy our warm "Indian summer", wearing shorts and tank tops, it seems like the city's weather decided to mess with me. In other words, it is now freezing in SF. I learned my lesson, and I found a few pieces that fall in both Spring-Summer and Fall-Winter seasons. Time to mix and match!

Denim: Cotton On's Boyfriend Jean

Boyfriend jeans are a hot trend this year. The thing I love about them besides the comfort they provide, is the fact that they also conceal my little imperfections. I you have love handles like me, Boyfriend jeans are a great way to slim the waist down a little. They are also more casual than skinny jeans, and you can wear them with flats, heels or boots: everything works! Tank tops or T-shirts are great for a sunny day and give the whole outfit a fun and playful vibe, and you can just throw on a draped cardigan or a waisted jacket when the temperatures fall.

Get yours here!

Faux leather: Forever21's Edgy Girl Faux Leather Skirt

I'm not much of a trend follower; I usually just go with my mood; but this particular trend had me running into the stores to get my own "leather" skirt. Flowy or tight, thick or light, you can never go wrong with one of these. I'm loving it with a nice cropped sweater or a simple white T-shirt, and ankle boots. It's great on a warm day, but perfect with tights if you want to stay warm when the wind starts to blow. It definitely gives an edge to any outfit.

Get yours here!

The floral prints: Forever21's Wild Rose Quilted Bomber Jacket

Simply my fave of all times! It is perfect for an all black outfit and gives it a romantic touch. When it's warm but windy, just throw it on over a pair of jeans and a simple shirt.

F3: Fall Fashion Fest in Union Square!

The Fashion scene here in SF is quite weak compared to those of Paris or New York, but the Union Square is still making cool events happen.
On October 3rd, I went to Union Square for the 2013 Fashion Fest, where stores stayed open late and put on fashion shows and parties for customers, fashion bloggers and fashionistas to enjoy. I must say I had a blast.
Advice: unless you are planning on staying in one store, do NOT wear heels; it is not a good idea.
Here are a few pictures I was able to snap between each race to my favorite stores. Can't wait for next year!

Bringin' Sexy Back!

As a rather...busty woman, I do not enjoy showing too much cleavage because it can become easily provocative, and I'm sure all busty women know what I am talking about!
Unless I am in an adequate situation like a night club, where I consider it is acceptable to show off and be a bit sexy, my confidence somehow disappears, especially for daytime activities, so I balance a covered front with sexy cutouts in the back!
This top is gorgeous with high waisted shorts or pants. I think it just speaks for itself.

Forever21 21 Days of Layers Inspired Look: Long Live the Cardigan!

Gotta love the Californian weather. Coming from France, I was pretty happy to see that it wasn't that cold here in San Francisco. Even in Fall!
This Indian summer weather is just perfect for me, as I often get cold in the upper part of my body, like my shoulders or my neck, while my legs always enjoy a bit of freshness.
If you're weird like that too, the combination Summer dress - Cardigan is perfect for the first days of Fall. Yep, layering is hands down my favorite Fashion trend this season: as it is always nice and sunny despite the cool wind, I can wear one of my favorite summer dresses and give a bit of texture to my outfit with a nice cotton cardigan and a jacket, thick enough to make up for the nakedness of my legs.

I was on my way to school, so I don't wear anything fancy because I am L-A-Z-Y; I like to be comfortable and casual. But if I was going downtown or on a date, I would substitute my flats with nice brown boots and a cute matching purse.

*These photos were taken by the handsome Spencer, who accepted to model too, because he is cool like that.

Back to the roots: The African Shop !!

Hi guys!

We've been seeing a lot of new trends on the catwalks lately, and the "African print" was definitely one of them. As a certified trend-follower, I had to find me some goodies, and even though it is fairly easy for the jewelry, it is definitely harder to find nice pieces of clothing for an affordable price here in the US.

After my fastidious search, I finally found this Facebook page featuring "The African Shop". I have visited their website; the styles and colors are gorgeous. Plus some of their items are from Senegal (my home country), yay! I have yet to find out what else they offer. Definitely something to try!

"You Need Black Friends"

I went natural a few months ago (yaay, Big Chop!) I am really happy about it and I actually get excited before shampooing...Feeling my tight little curls growing from day to day just makes me feel like I am discovering myself again, since my hair has been relaxed since I was around 10.

In Senegal, relaxing your hair was not seen as a bad thing. People weren’t exactly informed about the negative effects of overused relaxer. As a little girl, I just loved that it made my hair shine and easy to style, as it was part of the culture. At every major ceremony, we would go to the salon and end up with beautiful straight hair. Realizing the negative effects of relaxer just helped me re-discovering my natural beauty, and now I love and have fun with my hair.

Anyways, I didn’t really know how I would look like after cutting my hair short, and I eventually managed to find a style to match my hair…but nobody warned me about how hard  it is to find a braiding salon in San Francisco, for an acceptable price. When my boyfriend said to me with a dead-serious expression “You need black friends”, I thought he was making fun of me, and automatically made my offended, why-are-you-stereotyping-us face, before actually thinking about what he said.

Now there ARE braiding salons in the city, they just pop out every now and then, but the price is usually around $200. No less than $160. As a student, I definitely cannot afford this. I say: we should have a giant forum for anyone wanting to get braids in a certain part of the city – or even the country, or the world, even!

In a meantime, my boyfriend was right: as a community we need to have each other's back. It is thanks to the beautiful Brittany that I was able to find the person that would braid my hair for less than half of the “normal” price. I met her on the Muni train, the most random place ever, just by asking her about her braids, I was able to get her cousin’s number and an appointment at her house.

Networking is key in this world, from work opportunities to cheap braids. And I made a gorgeous, sweet friend in the process. Thank you Brittany!

End of summer favorites: bold stripes and a touch of color

Hello everyone!

So I went on a little trip to San Jose, and I just thought I would show you my today's outfit.

This dress is one of my favorites from this summer, and I wanted to rock it one last time before the cold hit. But I wasn't courageous enough and took a little jumper with me, just in case (I get cold veeery easily). I don't usually go for knitwear a lot, but I literally fell in love with this cute cropped burgundy jumper, super comfy and light, perfect for Fall.

I hope you like this look, xx

Back to Blue !

Hello everyone!
As the cold weather and the fog are coming back here in San Francisco, I thought I would go back to thick fabric that would keep me warm without being too warm. And I thought denim was perfect for that day!
I got the jacket from Old Navy a few years ago. Since fashion is so cyclical, I knew that keeping it would be worth it. The “all-denim” stlyle is back in!
